Airborne Remote Sensing

Air Target Services Pty. Ltd. introduces a unique, fully commercial Airborne Remote Sensing service based in Australia and operating throughout the world. At the heart of this specialised service a Daedalus 1268 Airborne Thematic Mapper (ATM) system.

The Daedalus 1268 ATM was designed by Daedalus Enterprises Inc. (USA), to acquire spectral information over an identical range to that of the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite system. The Daedalus ATM offering additional wavelengths and flexibility in spatial resolutions far in excess of the spaceborne TM
(See Daedalus ATM 'Specifications' )

Multispectral Image Data
....A Comparison From Various Platforms

10 metre - Airborne TM_____20 metre - SPOT_____30 metre - Landsat TM_____80 metre - Landsat MSS
(Image quality has been reduced to decrease file size)

The spectral bands aquired by the Daedalus 1268 ATM range from the near Ultra-violet region of the spectrum, through to the thermal Infra-red region, being sampled at 11 discrete points over this spectrum providing 11 individual wavelength responses. The extra wavelengths available from the ATM over the Landsat TM allow for better discrimination of surface types for usage in specific applications (See Daedalus ATM 'Applications' )
With a thermal sensing capability unmatched by current satellite based systems, the Daedalus 1268 ATM provides an extremely versatile dataset for unique thermal applications. The system also allowing for real-time applications such as bushfire mapping/detection (the ' AIRFIRE ' service), Search & Rescue (SAR) applications and Oil Spill Mapping.

Airborne Thermal Infrared Image Data
......A Comparison - Airborne v Satellite

10 metre - Airborne TM____________120 metre - Landsat TM

The two main advantages of airborne aquired data are the spatial resolutions (pixel size) available, and the ability to plan an overpass at any given time, day or night. - Multispectral image data from current commercially available satellite systems is limited to resolutions of 20 metre (SPOT), and 30 metre (Landsat TM). With a variety of airborne platforms available, the Daedalus 1268 ATM image data can be gathered at resolutions between 2.5 and 30 metres, all 11 bands being co-registered at the same pixel resolution. - The multispectral satellite based systems are limited by sometimes excessive overhead re-visit times on a particular site, these times being at least 16 days, and up to 26 days, having little flexibility on the planned time of day for the overpass. This can potentially cause problems if there is cloud present on the day of the overpass, or the time of the overpass does not coincide with other required project variables, eg. tidal times, sun angles, vegetation conditions etc.
